Sunflower (Sort of) Spectacular

Last weekend I picked Little up to go check out a field of sunflowers at the Mass Horticultural Society in Wellesley. When I picked her up, she climbed into the front seat and buckled the seatbelt as I said to her “we’re gonna be old ladies today and go look at a garden!” As is her usual character, she was game.

The night before our outing, I realized the drive is actually quite far. Anticipating an hour on the road, I found a bakery halfway there for us to pitstop to break up the ride.

I got her emotionally invested in a silly but entertaining podcast called Normal Gossip, and it gave us something to listen to during the drive. We stopped in Lexington, very bougie, to pick up some sandwiches and drinks for the road.

A bit exasperated with myself for choosing an outing with a long drive (mostly because I was concerned she’d find it boring), I said on our way back to the car with self-deprication, “It’s always an adventure!“ to which Little responded with earnestness “a FUN adventure!”

We had a great time exploring the gardens, picking out a few sunflowers, and joking about how sad they looked. We were visiting on the final weekend of the Sunflower Spectacular!

Three days later, she started her high school career!
