Glass Fusing Experience!

Naomi and I met way back when we were babies, new to the field of journalism. We worked at The Auburn Citizen together and became good friends while learning about living on our own and managing the experience of small town life (and mindsets). At one point during our time there, we were tasked with chasing around the Clintons while they vacationed in our coverage area. She told me during her recent visit that one of her stories was about the type of ice cream they’d eaten on vacation. I mean, I’m joking about the “hard hitting” work we did but in truth it was an absolute blast, especially since we had the challenge of not being in the media pool who had the inside on everything the family would be doing day to day. Our editors would connect with the local police, who would have a idea of where the Clintons would be, then we’d get sent out on assignment accordingly.

That time in 2000 when a middle aged man from our town who owned a limo drove us around for fun. We now have questions.

Weeks ago Naomi got in touch to let me know that she’d be in MA to drop her son off at a camp friend’s Bar Mitzvah this past weekend. I was so excited she thought to get in touch, because we haven’t seen each other since her older son, who is now sixteen, was a toddler.

So yes, it’s been about fourteen years since we’ve seen each other! Shortly after we planned to connect, I sent her – along with my other friends – an email about my fiftieth birthday project, and she let me know we should take advantage of our visit to find a new experience to do.

We both dug around and she found Luke Adam’s Glass in Norwood. I’d been before with friends but we’d tried glass blowing. Naomi signed us up for a glass fusing class. New to both of us!

When I arrived at Luke’s to meet Naomi I found her completely unchanged from fourteen years ago. Bright smile, wit, no nonsense and quick to laugh. We enjoyed the glass fusing class, which including whispering to each other about how the instructor seemed to be annoyed that we didn’t know the answers to our own questions about this brand new skill we’d never tried before. The nerve! Naomi’s hands were all cut up from the glass, but she hid it from the instructor for fear of being scolded!

We were please with the results of our efforts, and will be getting them sent to us in a few weeks after they are fired.

From there we had time to go grab lunch and really catch up. A great day with a lovely human!
